Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility Dukovany
Interim spent fuel storage facility Dukovany (ISFSF Dukovany) is used for storage of spent fuel generated by VVER-440 reactors of NPP Dukovany. Spent fuel is stored in CASTOR 440/84 casks. Total storage capacity of the facility is 60 pcs. of casks for in total 600 t HM.
The trial operation of ISFSF Dukovany took place from December 1995 till January 1997 in line with SÚJB license No. 245/95. Then the ISFSF Dukovany moved into a permanent operation according to the SÚJB licence No. 29/97. At present, MSVP Dukovany is operated in accordance with the decision of the SÚJB No. SÚJB/ONRV/24217/2020 of 15 December 2020. This decision is enforceable from 1 January 2021 and thus follows the previous decision of the SÚJB, which expired on 31 December 2020. In accordance with § 21 para. 2 of Act No. 263/2016 Coll., the Atomic Act, this licence is issued for an indefinite period.
Utilised CASTOR 440/84 casks are licensed for transport and storage of spent fuel and the license is issued for about 10 years. By the SÚJB license No. 10973/2005 from 30 June 2005 the CASTOR 440/84 cask was licensed for railway transports and storage of spent fuel from VVER-440 reactors. After a 10-year period of validity, this decision was replaced by another decision of the SÚJB on type-approval No. SÚJB/ONRV/25380/2015, with effect for a further ten years of operation of MSVP Dukovany.
In the presence of SÚJB, ČEZ, a. s., GNS mbH (cask manufacturer) and Vysočina county representatives and other guests the last CASTOR 440/84 cask was placed into the ISFSF Dukovany on 8 March 2006. Spent fuel will be stored in the ISFSF Dukovany until the deep geologic repository is constructed and commissioned and then it will be transported, repacked into the disposal casks and disposed. At the NPP Dukovany site a similar new storage facility is already built and operated and its capacity is sufficient to accommodate remaining spent fuel generated by the NPP Dukovany during its whole operational time. Same storage technology is used also in NPP Temelín.
